CofC Gives USC a Scare

Columbia, SC- This past weekend's game started off well, with Zach Engel hitting the crossbar from 25 yard out within the first two minutes. Unfortunately the team's production slumped as the game got going and the center of the midfield was dominated for large portions of the first half by College of Charleston.

Against the run of play, Brandon Parr drew a penalty after his shot from outside of the box struck the hand of the Charleston defender just before the halftime whistle. Caleb McPherson stepped up and kept his cool, slotting the resultant penalty into the side netting.

Early in the second half Chase O'Connor had a swashbuckling run down the right side of the Charleston flank and put a low cross across the box. Colin Schaffer was there to bury it for his first goal for the team.

Charleston scored late on as they pushed hard in the last 10 minutes, but Ben Risko once again had some great saves to keep the Gamecock's perfect start alive.

The game this weekend was scheduled for Saturday at Western Carolina University but they have withdrawn from the league and the team was awarded a consolation 1-0 victory. Next up, USC takes on their rivals away at Clemson on Sunday, September 18 at 2:00 pm in what is always a feisty affair.
